We have two bathrooms on the same floor, back to back. One has a tub with a shower and the other has a shower stall (no tub). When someone takes a shower in the one with the tub, the water does not drain at all while the water is on,but backs up into the shower stall in the other bathroom and will not drain from there until the shower water is turned off. It gets close to running over out of the stall!

By the same token, when the shower is used in the stall, that water will not drain either until that water is turned off. When I plunge to get the drain to open, some of it will go down with a rush temporarily. Eventually it does drain but very sloooowly.

Has anyone experienced this problem? Any advice? Thanks, Dee

It sounds like you have a clog in the line. It's not unusual for a clog in this type of situation to cause a backup into another fixture because water will always seek the path of least resistance and the two fixtures are piped with a common drain line.

Very simply, you have a clog in the line either at the end by the shower or past the tub that is causing water to stop flowing down the drain line and to come up in the shower.

I suggest that you go buy a cheap drain clearing product like a plastic snake. It is likely just a hair clog and you'll get it out with one of these tools. If the blockage isn't just hair then you might need to get a plumber involved, but give it a shot first. You can buy pretty decent drain clearing products at the hardware store, but don't use "cleaners" as they use chemicals rather than mechanical means to clear the clog.

Again, DO NOT use drain cleaner... it will just make it nasty when you finally get the drain clear.

Thanks, animator2002: I actually called Roto Rooter last year for this same problem and they had to come out twice since the first time was unsuccesful. However, the second time was worse. They snaked the drainage system from under the kitchen sink and accidentally punched a hole in a pipe down in the basement that we didn't discover until the next day. And the pipe with a hole in it was in an unreachable place to fix, so he had to put a hole in the wall of an adjoining bedroom to get to it. What a fiasco. And, of course Roto Rooter is not responsible for ANYTHING THAT HAPPENS, so , needless to say, I really don't want to call them again! And besides that, they sold me a @25.00 jug of drain cleaner, that I am now afraid to use. I appreciate your advice and, what drain would you advise to put the snake in?

Had the drain snaked yesterday by my son and it works like a charm. He had to go in for at least 20 feet, but--------my shower drainage is weird no more. Hallelujah!!!!!
