It's been a long time, but I want to start playing my flute again. What I need is some good books of intermediate level sheet music. Is there a good store online that sells sheet music for various instruments?

I was playing at a pretty decent level when I put my flute down about 15 years ago, but now I'm back to struggling to stay ahead of the sheet music... a book of popular songs that aren't totally hokey would be a good way for me to get back into it.

Oh yeah, there are lots of online stores with sheet music by instrument.

Another is Carl Fischer. As a former Chicagoan myself, I have spent many a day in their big store in the Loop on Wabash under the el tracks (though I think their headquarters is actually in NYC). Take the elevator up to the "band music" level and feast on their vast collection of solo & ensemble music.

Browsing through endless file cabinets of music beats the heck out of browsing online, IMO. My experience with picking up a musical instrument (sax & clarinet in my case) after a several-year hiatus is that it comes back pretty quickly if you're serious about practicing. Good luck!

I think you might be right about going to the store in person. It seems like it will be hard to know what I'm getting unless I can actually page through it and see if it's over my head or not.

I will see if I can get over to check it out this week sometime... it sounds like fun.

Aw, say it ain't so. It's been a few years since I last visited, but they'd been there all my life. I used to plan my whole day around a trip to their store. For me it's the end of (yet another) era...

Hopefully there's still Karnes Music in the Chicago area, another outfit that dates back to my childhood, in the late Pleistocene.

Well, if you are in the US one of the biggest places to order music from would be http://www.hickeys.com . Another good one would be http://www.rkingmusic.com . I play the trombone and have ordered everything I've got music-wise through these two places. Try Hickeys first, their site is easier to navigate around and if you need to call them (1-800 HICKEYS) they are very friendly and helpful.
