If you are just learning, i would recomend an acoustic, if you buy and electric guitar, you will also have to buy cables and an amplifier etc. so that may cost you a lot more than a good acoustic guitar. The strings on an electric are much easier to push down, so it might be easier to play at first, but if you ever wanted to switch to acoustic it would be harder for you to fret the notes. So if you start out on acoustic you will spend less money, and be able to easily play electric also. Plus with electric you have to worry about how everything is setup on the amp and the guitar so that you get the sound you are looking for while in acoustic you will get the right sound every time (as long as you tune it... my only other recomendation is to get an electric tuner, they are pretty easy to use and only cost like 20 bucks and they help a lot.)
if you have any questions feel free to email me or post here. -Chris

I got a nice acoustic at a pawn shop for $100. There's not a scratch on it and it plays great. For somebody else, I mean. My son who plays a mean lead guitar, tells me that unless my fingertips are bleeding, I'm not practicing enough. You have to build up calluses, and that takes a while. Good luck anyway!
