Am Not a Musician but am Curious

What do the Dots denote on the Frets of Guitars
and It seems a standardised pattern and why is the 12th fret always a double dot?

When I was very young I can recall seeing an electric guitar with a "1 2 1" ect pattern Non standard? or where they Dotted differently in the 60's or earlier models?

Hello bedstor. I'm surprised no one's answered yet because many others are far more qualified than I am in this particular area of music theory.

Basically though, the dots are there as a guide for the guitarist, enabling him or her to position the fingers quickly and easily. This is due to the fact that he or she has these reference points to work around as movement around the guitar neck progresses. Think of those four raised dots too on typewriter keys.

Musical notes recur and rpeat themslves continually, of course, and so the double dot on the 12th fret shows the change of octave.

Forgive me you experts for any imprecison, but this one deserves an answer. And now Ritz, over to you!

Hi Gang:

The dots are there to indicate where the 3rd,5th,7th,9th,12th,15th,17th,19th and 21st frets are located .
