Hippolips' reply in this thread is probably the best advice you can get. I am sure that the several professional musicians in AnswerPool will agree that taking lessons is the best way to learn. Before your son (or anyone) can learn to play like someone else, he must learn to play.

My son, who has played for just under seven years, practices for several hours daily and has legitimate sights set on playing professionally. I, on the other hand, have played for over 30 years and am not much good for anything but carols with the family at Christmas.
