I was originally trained on the piano, but took up the guitar on my own for fun. It's easier to take on business trips with me!
I play a Fender Stratocaster electric guitar and a Takamine Classical guitar (though my style would not be recognized as classical!). On a bad money day in the late '70s, I foolishly sold my Gibson ES335TD which I wish I had today.
Others?

I hope you get alot of really great replies from budding musicians (and maybe some already accomplished ones!!) here...I always dreamed of playing an instrument. My dad had a coronet which I expressed interest in at age 12. He gave me a couple of lessons, but I apparently didn't have the right kind of lips for a horn! I guess you've got to have thin ones unless you want to end up with lips like Louis Armstrong.
My oldest daughter took violin in High School and wasn't half bad - I was very proud of her.
When I met my real father in 1979 I found out he and my mom had met when he was in a band, playing a tenor sax...sax is my absolute favorite, wouldn't you know.
I will always regret not having seriously taken up an instrument!
started out with the violin, that lasted a year, tinkered with the piano for a little. then the drums for a year or two then the sax, first alto then tenor, i cant remember if i played bass sax i think i did, Played the sax for 'round 4-5 years. ive been singing for bout my whole life, was in some acapella groups, then i got into guitar, and i am ok with that. i keep one in my room and fiddle with it sometimes,if i practice a lot i can get really good but then i stop playing and forget stuff. but singing is my specialty

Brass section with trumpet being my primary instrument. Actually, I should state that in the past tense since it has been many years since I last played. And a horn player must practice or you lose your embouchure. Started on piano though.
I started on drums, then added vibraphone, the piano, organ and now I play guitar[a little over 5 years]. By far ,for me, guitar is the toughest instrument to play,if you want to play more than the same 3 chords that all the rockers play. On guitar, because of the way the strings are laid out,you cannot always play a particular chord in the same inversion, one octave higher or lower. This is not a problem on vibes or piano. Instead ,on guitar, you often have to use a different inversion of the chord if you play it one octave up or down.It makes you grab chord inversions that you would never use on piano in a chord sequence.Very challenging!
I've played trumpet for..o wow, i guess well..since fourth grade..so I guess thats what? 6 years? it seems like less time but I think i'm pretty good. People tell me I am? I love it! and am learning how to play french horn currently...
I used to play piano, but it broke so now I'm stuck with keyboard. sigh. But thats OK, because I love music.
I just got a whole bunch of little "clay flute-type things" from a cultural festival i went to about 2 weeks ago..trying to learn to play them by ear. Also I've been playing around with my harmonica and recorder for a couple years, but sad to say I still can only play "Twinkle-Twinkle little star" and a few others...

Started with violin, moved to drums. Took some guitar and piano, then went back to drums. (Don't like the circle of 5ths!) Sold my drums, now I play my steering wheel.

My favorite and most used instrument is my Epiphone classic guitar. I have a Takamine 12 string that is played a lot less. I have a pretty big collection of wooden, ethnic and silver flutes that get played a lot when I don't feel like singing. I have a violin made in the Apalacheas. I am trying to learn on it. Fun instrument but harder than I thought. In college I played the cello and thought this would be easier. Wrong. My daughter has a half sized harp that we are both learning on. When I want to scare the cat, I pull out my tenor sax. Wow do I ever stink on that.
I play a pretty bad guitar. (I mean, not good, bad), and the drums I have played in a band before. I learned how to play guitar, because I had songs to write... it was merely a tool that allowed me to put melody to the words I had. I got real into it for awhile, but not lately. I have a fender telecaster that is way too heavy and an aria acoustic.
I have been playing the piano for about 4 years now, and am trying to do learn classical guitar - my mom says that when I learn all the notes then I can have a teacher, but I'm not getting that far. 8-)
The bass, and then by default, cello and with great concentration, violin. Except that i gave them up without regret - for in music I am willingly the audience moved by great music (a sensation I didn't experience in the playing.)
I've played Alto Sax since I was twelve. A couple of years ago, I received a Soprano Sax as a gift. Unfortunatly, I've not practiced either for quite a while. I live in an apartment, and the neighbors hate it when I play.

When I was 5, I started the piano. I've never stopped. While in school I played the violin, clarinet, guitar, trumpet (didn't like that one) and oh oh oh, the jingle bells in "Sleigh Ride." I was the student director of my high school band. Now I still play the piano...but my new love is the English Handbells. I've been playing for 3 years now. I'm in the large choir at church; I'm the director and a member of our quartet and I'm currently studying solo ringing. Without music, I would go completely insane.
Started with piano, 8 years old. Dabbled with banjo (the big G version) and mandoline but returned to piano. Managed to get into the Royal College of Music. Needed a second instrument, so took up Double Bass. Later, dropped bass; returned to piano exclusively. Joined bands, and took up Bass Guitar & Guitar, followed by Fender piano, Hammond C3, various synthesisers (at one time I was surrounded and hidden by 5 keyboards! Finally retired from performing after working in various places, including the Middle East for seven years, and now teach my first and lasting love, the piano. Note to Prothero; sorry you didn't find joy in the actual playing, but am very pleased that you still enjoy listening. Perhaps you ought to take lessons once more in one of your instruments as a mature student; who knows, you may surprise yourself! Remember there are no types of music better or worse; just good and bad in all types, so all of you just enjoy your thang...
