I couldn't find another section to post this.
I am in Community College now. I was curious about how I would become a County Coroner.
If someone could help me out it would be greatly appreciated......

This ad for Deputy Coroner I, Cowlitz County offers the following description...

2. Familiar with Washington State applicable statutes.
3. Obtain basic knowledge of Medicolegal death investigations and attend the Washington State Medicolegal DeathInvestigation Course within one-year of employment.
4. Possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.
The job description is intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by the incumbent, and is not to beconstrued as an exclusive list of responsibilities, duties and skills required by the incumbent on this position. The job description does not imply an offer of employment, nor a contract for employment. It is subject to change at the discretion of the employer.
Required Skills and Abilities:
1.Knowledge of applicable laws and standard practices related to the duties of the Coroner’s Office.
2.Interpersonal and customer service skills to effectively deal with grieving families, and others requiring services. Develop and maintain good working relations with dept. staff, other county employees, other agencies, the public and the media.
3.Assist with autopsies, conduct investigations and determine causes of death. Maintain accurate and organized records.
4.Excellent communication skills, both orally and in writing, in a professional business-like manner. Skilled at preparing thorough, organizedand clearly presented technical reports. Convey medical and technical information in a manner that is understandable to the audience
5.Work well independently as well as in a cooperative environment. Multi-task work environment with deadlines.
6.Able to exercise judgement and discretion of sensitive or confidential matters.

Based on that, I'd say that shooting for a Nursing degree and taking whatever public speaking, interpersonal communications and Administration of Justice classes are available would serve you well in such a goal... Intro to Social Work would be helpful, too.

I agree with S. The Nursing degree is a most versitile degree that can be used if the additional training for Coroner'ship' doesn't work for you . Smile

Okay, I’ve got to ask: why do you want to be a coroner?

Ron, I can't imagine a rapper like you wanting to be a coroner.

Yo, yo, as you lay on the bed
Gotta check to see if you're really dead.

Yo, Yo, as you lay on the floor,
Gotta make sho, you breathe no more

Yo, yo, as you lay on the ground
Gotta make sure yo heart don't pound.

Okay Ron, you know this is just for fun. You know we are cool with each other. Smile

Do you really mean a coroner or a Medical Examiner? (M.E.)

Many jurisdictions have replaced the elected coroner with a Medical Examiner, who in some jurisdictions (not all) must be a physician, and is most often a specialist in pathology or forensic medicine. In some jurisdictions, a medical examiner must be both a doctor and a lawyer.

A coroner is either the presiding officer of a special court, a medical officer or an officer of law responsible for investigating deaths, particularly those happening under unusual circumstances.

http://www.in.gov/ctb/resources/ for a better idea of what a coroner is. Mind in Indiana they are elected into their post.

A "fun" one for California: http://www.coroners.org

Medical Examiners in most places have to carry an MD - be a medical doctor. Their job is autopsies and stuff like that so having a medical background allows them to investigate cause of death. beneath them there are forensic specialists, for lab tests and all of that.

Different States and Nations have different requirements for both M.E and Coroner.
