I don't know how many fellow members are as ancient as I am Eek I just turned 40 last month and was just wondering if any of you other fellow ancients had a slight problem with this birthday. I've been thinking a lot about the past and pondering the future. It seemed to come so quickly!!!

Just wondering......

BlueIce, I remember my 40th birthday well...it didn't really bother me too much, even though.....

That same year, my oldest daughter graduated from High School and I got bifocals. Talk about a triple whammy!

I think my turning 40 hit my mom harder than it did me! I'm 46 now, and I know I look better at 46 than she did....I guess I'm lucky and am going to age gracefully! Big Grin

BlueIce...I face the dreaded date in December. Usually I love birthdays...and age has never bothered me...prob cuz I lie about it all the time! LOL

But for some reason I have a mental block about turning 40. It's as if I feel I wasted half of my life because I have never been married, I have no kids, I don't own a house. Don't get me wrong, I am a successful "career woman" but I still feel like a little kid and feel like I should have more to show for my life then I do.

When I turned 30 I asked my mother if I turned out the way she thought I would. She said "No, I always figured by 30 you'd be married with children...or a business woman" I hate to see how she will answer when I ask her at 40!

OK, I've totally depressed myself! I just can't believe I'm not married at 40!!!! Frown

Turning 40 did not bother me. I thought I would see 80 so my life was not half over yet. Turning 45 was a hard birthday for me to take, because I thought I'll never see 90 thus I'm on the second half.

Sagus just turned 40 yesterday, Sept 22.

He seems okay with it... but I do know he regrets not going to college sooner.

I just turned 40 this month. Do I understand what you mean. My kids will be grown. I'm half dead or even closer than that! I really don't regret my past. That was after lots of pondering. Now what I'm busy pondering is what I want to do with the next half of my life. The goals of younger years have been met. Now I need new ones just to have some sense of direction and purpose. It also give me a feeling of control over my life that I'm lacking right now. There are so many choices. I don't know what to make of it all. I don't like this middle age weight gain and the fact that I can't see either! This is a yuck age.

Would you all yell at me, or kick me if I told you I am more worried about turning 30 in February?

Growing older has never bothered me as the alternative is rather dismal!! I will be 42 in a matter of months and that does not concern me...I'm just happy to be me Big Grin

Hi BlueIce63 ! Welcome to a rather large club filled with some wonderful, energetic people. I turned 43 this weekend. My kid sister turned 40 on August 10th ! DO I feel old ? Sometimes, but for the most part I find that I am the same old slob inside that I was in my early 20's, perhaps with a touch less energy. I also did a lot of reflecting about the time I reached 40. It is fairly
natural, as that is a plateau which is talked about as if it a curse. As has already been said in this thread, growing older does beat the alternative.

My problem is that when I was in grade school, I liked high school girls. When I was in high school, I liked high school girls. Now that I'm 40...........

Shelster, you should have taken Sher's advice. I'm sending you a cyber kick in the butt!!

Turning 30 didn't bother me at all. Well, except for my best friend at the time who was eight years younger than me that couldn't resist bringing it into conversation with absolutely everyone about how old I was. Well, I turned the tables on her for that one. One good prank does deserve another one.

My friend was intelligent, attractive, and mature. She related to people a bit older than her than the college crowd that wanted to go to the clubs. So, our mutual friends were closer to my age than hers. We all know about the arrogance of youth! I started conversations about the times of the 70's, which completely left her out in the cold conversation wise. It was funny!

We had these stupid little competetions all the time. Nothing hurtful, well, until she started competing over my husband that I had to small kids with. She went too far that time. Other than that, it was just an inside joke with us.

Come on Kendor! Finish that post!! Don't tell me that you are going out and buying a red convertable with cool sunglasses. You are hanging out at the gym. I will send you a cyber kick in the butt too!!

Do I know what you mean about a yound mind and an aging body! I'm still me. I keep wondering what happened to all the time. They do say it flies by.

My son will be 20 when I turn 40. (that is in 5 years) My life is going to begin when I'm 40. I spent all my 20's and 30's raising him. It is going to be great! Smile

Thanks to all of you for your insightfull responses.

To Georgia - Marriage is not the do all and end all in life. You said you are a successful business woman, good for you, not everyone can say that.

Clarebear - Good for you. I hope your 40's are everything you're anticipating.

Lydia - "Happy to be me" Love it!

Last but not least, SHELSTER - 29? You're an embrio. Smile LOL You'll know what I mean in about 10 years.

Nahhh, turning 40 didn't bother me. I'm just that much closer to retirement. Smile. I'm 43, and as they say, I'm not getting older, I'm getting better. Smile.

I could regret having a low-paying, menial job--but I could be unemployed.

I could regret the fact I don't own a home---but I could be homeless.

I could regret not having kids---but I could also have kids and regret that. Big Grin

I could regret not being married till almost the age of 42......then having my wife pass away after little over a year of marriage---but I instead am so grateful for having that short time together. Smile

So I guess it's all a matter of perspective. Smile

I had a great-grandmother live to be 98...and a great-aunt is still living at 97....and a grandmother who lived to 94...and a great-uncle who lived to be 90.

So it could be I've got a whole lot of livin' yet to go!!!!

I'm 26 but feel so much older at times. I feel I already have lived most of my life now. So age is only a number you guys.

Lol@Don! Well, I hope there is a lot more out there for me to learn! If what I have all figured out is all there is to know, this world is one seriously confusing place!! I only wish I knew a fraction of what I though I did in much younger days.

I was joking with Sam about her age and this lovely middle age weight gain that hits you. My eyesight suddenly changed also. The things we take for granted!

Actually - I panicked and cried. Pity. Roll Eyes

When I turned 40, I was in a lot better state of mind and took it quite well. Smile

When I turned 50 - I didn't give a hoot! Just gimme cake! Razz

40 was a very good year. I had a job I loved, my kids were growing into people I like being around, and my marriage was still stable.

Now I'm 47, the kids have grown into men I'm proud to know, the 30 year marriage went kaput, but I'm in love with a 54 year old man who brings out the kid in me.

Age is just a number. I have to remind myself how old we are most of the time.
