Those who defend this professor, why?

This is not ethical practice. My father in-law is a retired Chair of English. He worked on many projects for publication, but never used students to do his work.

Amy stated this as a project for her dissertation. Are you serious?

Amy, if you are still around, please ignore the above post. WF seems to not have a clue about academe.

DG, not right telling her to ignore what I am saying! College professors can and do use their students for their own gain in more ways than one.

We are paying up big time for our own education and a degree for our kids. Shouldn't we question what is really going on in the classroom? We should!

There are fantastic professors out there and some not so good. This a good class project, but nothing of dissertation. I honestly think this guy is trying to publish from his student's work, not good!

I am a college grad and have a Department Chair in the family. He is a bit old, but never used students to publish. He feels it is ethically wrong and I agree.

You have the right to disagree, but that does not make what you say right.

I feel that I have a duty to this site, its members, and any potential members to point out that your opinions do not represent the thinking of most members.

You also seem to have missed something (again). Amy clearly stated that her name will be on the work.

I stand by my statement that you seem to not be aware of how academic life works.

DG, I feel a duty to state the reality of college professors. They are not able to teach a high school student. They don't have the credentials.

To be a college professor, you only need to be 'expert in field'. We are paying big bucks for our education and to educate our kids. A grade school teacher has to stand up to much higher standards than a college professor. True!

Stating that my concerns should be 'ignored' isn't the right choice. College degrees cost a lot of money. Many people have debt with student loans that could buy a house! Shouldn't we question what we are paying for?

I'm not being a 'know it all'. I am stating that this is not a usual practice for dissertation and have a family member to back this statement, a retired department chair.

Roll your eyes all you want, but be thankful you are not the one paying expensive tuition for a 'bad professor' for yourself our kids.

I don't like what this guy is doing and I have every right to speak against college professors that shouldn't be teaching.

I object to the fact that Amy and her peers are requested to participate in a 'study' to be later published as the work of her professor. This is not what grad degree dissertation is about.

WF, every once in a while, you make sense. This, however, is not one of those times.

I actually look at what my kids education. I already know a high school diploma means nothing at all.

Everyone is going after a degree. This makes every degree 'cheap' in the job market. That is why I advised my son towards something different, something the kid can live with.

My son was a bit to easy, but not so sure what to advise my daughter. I better start thinking! I am the elder, the one to advise the young generation.

My son is doing fantastic and happy with 'our' choice of Car School. He will be highly paid with an Associate Degree. I know my son and what doesn't work for him, so find something that does.

What do I advise my daughter to do given the fact that our college degree is now very cheap in the job market? I already know that the price tag of 'student loan' is expensive and not worth it.

I haven't figured out my daughter just yet. I knew where to send my son and he loves what he is doing. I want the same for her, but she is young, but old enough to start planning.

I don't suggest college degrees. They come too cheap today, but the tuition and debt of student loan is enough to make you wish you just flipped burgers for a living. It pays the same, so why deal with the stress?

That's how it really is! I will not advise either of my kids to get a degree, just make some cash with skill.

Nothing in this thread has anything to do with your son or your daughter. However, I suspect you are right in not suggesting college for either of your children.

I am closing this thread. Amy has her volunteers, and has thanked us. That covers the topic.
