We British call it 'noughts and crosses', which needs no explanation. How and why did it come by its American name?

tick-tack-toe - 1884, probably an extension of tick-tack (1588), a form of backgammon, possibly from M.Fr. trictrac. I got this from Google; there are other references at "Tick-tack -toe Etymology"
