By the way, most search engines have a tool that will let you translate words and even sentences (though you should use the sentence translations with caution, because they can give some funny (and wrong) results).
Although I wouldn't use it for full sentences, Google Language tools gives the correct literal translation in this case (albeit without juanruiz's helpful addition).
Indeed, Rive Gauche refers to the left bank (south side) of the Seine in Paris.
"Rive Gauche" is often more than geographic. It conjures up images of the most bohemian elements of Paris; the Rive Gauche is where the city's most famous writers and artists once gathered.
