Every restaurant I have ever worked in (all in the St. Louis area) that has a carpet has used a push type carpet cleaner called a hoagie. (The word is both a noun and a verb. "Hoagie the carpet." "Get the hoagie out and clean the carpet.") Theaters also use this term. Yet no one outside the business has ever heard of the term used in this way. Does anyone else use this term for a non-electric push carpet cleaner? Is it just a St. Louis area usage?

I believe it is called a Hoky and no, I've never used that term. When I worked in nightclubs it was just called a carpet sweeper and we would "sweep" the carpet at closing.

Thanks, Georgia. I guess the K sound got corrupted over time to a G sound, but that doesn't explain why non-restaurant/bar people wouldn't know the term.

Fuse, think meat tenderizer. A lot of meat tenderizer.

In So.CA they're called grinders. I wonder if they're still called Dagwoods anywhere.
