I got back from a trip to the UK yesterday. I used Speedferries out of Boulogne-sur-mer to croos to Dover - a quick and highly recommended operator though that's neither here nor there.
While in Staffordshire, I took my daughter to dinner, and on the menu saw that the restaurant was offering a list of "starters" (nothing unusual (linguistically) to me there, but also a list of what they termed "mains" (i.e. "main courses). I'm familiar with the process of lenition in languages and can even bring myself to ask my wife to pass the "remote" these days ("remote control" of course)) without curling up inside, but tell me, all you UK dwellers - how long as this "mains" business been going on over there? I just hadn't seen it before.

Dunno ! Haven't noticed it on menus myself. That said, I do hear people who are preparing to order for the table asking casually of others " What do you want as a main?" In fact, I say that myself Smile In pubs where the food is ordered at the bar one member of a group at table goes up to the bar and presents the order for all of them.

Note:There seems to be an informal convention that this is done by the senior person present; either that or its that my family thinks that whoever places the order might be hoped to pay in advance and, sure as eggs, it ain't going to be one of them Big Grin
