i hope this is not offensive to anyone, but i've always wondered how come some white people are referred to as "red necks". every time i see this phrase, it seem to refer to southern whites. are southern whites different from other whites? i know their speech are different because i've heard them talk. *******************************************************8 09-30-02, 02:49 PM Georgia85 "Red-Necks" are a classification of whites in CERTAIN southern regions. For example, Georgia has red-necks, good ol' boys, mountain men, trailer park trash and of course Yuppies, Urbanites, Preps...or just plain City Folk (like me!)
Rednecks are usually a step down from good ol' boys/gals and live in the south (usually in the country) and also tend to have a southern accent. They got the name because in olden days their necks were red and maybe their arms, too, cause they worked hard and were out in the heat all day. Now it get's a little more complicated... some types of rednecks may be cowboys/girls, mountain men/women, country boys/gals, and or hillbillys.
Basically, City Folk can't stand Red-Necks because we think they are crass, uneducated, and have no manners.
Any more questions...

09-30-02, 03:03 PM frankvan They think Jeff Foxworthy's same joke, repeated over and over again, is the pinnacle of humor. They like shotguns. They like motorcycles and guns and trucks and whiskey. They're usually missing teeth. They're rednecks. red·neck Pronunciation Key (r d n k ) n. Offensive Slang Used as a disparaging term for a member of the white rural laboring class, especially in the southern United States. A white person regarded as having a provincial, conservative, often bigoted attitude.
09-30-02, 03:07 PM honilov thanks for the reply, but i don't understand why city folks don't like them. they might be un-educated, but they probably have some other qualities to make up for it.
09-30-02, 03:56 PM Georgia85 OK - I'm gonna level with you. The Red-Necks I have met are Gay Bashers, Black Bashers, and usually Women Bashers. They'll pick a fight at the drop of the hat with one of the above. They are dis-respectfull of veiw-points other then their own. They treat their women like property - and their woman BETTER have supper (or is it dinner?) and a 12 pack waiting for them when they come in from the construction site. You don't want to mess with a red-neck. They are liable to grab the gun off the gun rack on their "pick-em up truck" and shoot you to kingdom come. And once again, do not confuse red-neck with a good ol' boy. Two different types of people.
So, that is why CITY FOLK have disdain for them!
09-30-02, 05:57 PM honilov thanks for the info. i'll try to stay clear of them.
10-01-02, 01:23 PM Georgia85 Now you have my curiosity up...why the interest in them? In fact, how did you ever hear about them being up in Illinois?
10-01-02, 01:55 PM honilov i was interested about rednecks because i've gotten so many redneck jokes from my friends. it always appeared that they were dumb. when i said i was gonna stay clear of them, i meant the ones that's here, that i know are from the south. actually, that was rude of me, because every white southerner is not a redneck. probably, none of them here are rednecks. i also get a lot of jokes about blondes being dumb, and i know that is not true. i thought maybe rednecks was just some joke like blondes.
10-01-02, 03:08 PM DorianGreyed Georgia, I live in Southern Illinois. There are many red-necks here, too. In my area, they are called "Hoosiers." To "hoosier" something up is to fix it with whatever is at hand rather than the right way. (You often see cardboard in a broken window for years in a house that has a new pick up every other year, trucks costing more than the house is worth, and people drinking and playing slots while complaining about not having enough money to pay monthly bills.)
10-01-02, 04:04 PM moe257 The origin of the word comes from sunburned necks of farmers and outdoor laborers, and originally meant a poor farmer. Farmers usually did not have much formal education and tend have had thinking restricted to their geographical location. That doesn't leave much room for acceptance of people from more liberal areas.
10-01-02, 05:29 PM Johnny Velo Georgia85 has the right answer and attitude, in my humble opinion. Now, Jimmy Carter is a "good ole boy". Even though he was a peanut farmer some time ago, he is still not considered a red neck. At least not by me. Now, my Daddy was from Nashville, Tn. He never had a bad word against anyone and never was bigoted or prejudiced. He was neither a red neck or a good ole boy, he was a southern gentleman.
10-01-02, 10:29 PM honilov nicely said, Velo. that's why i made an apology earlier. i'm sure there are a lot of nice white southerners. 10-02-02, 11:57 AM Georgia85 It's sad to say Honilov but the majority of red-neck jokes are pretty much accurate!
And Dorian - sounds like the Illinois Hoosiers are like the Ga rednecks!
10-03-02, 05:11 PM cattywampus I too love Jeff Foxworthy. Up hyeah in the non-SPacific Northwest we don't have rednecks. We have wetnecks, instead , defined as "people who love the rain, consider it romantic (I'm not kidding!)and have moss in all their crevices and raincoats that smell of mildew."
Catty (who has the skin of an alligator) big grin
10-15-02, 12:03 AM kdp333 I loved Jeff Foxworthy's show and jokes about a typical Red-kneck folk. These people may be a mite poor but they are thrifty! They can find ways to get around work by manuvering a individual who loves to help out, to do their work while they rest a spell! They are smart folk just unconventional in what they do. You might see a red-kneck if they're loading the dishwasher up to do the dishes. Of course, Alice Mae might be the dishwasher and she is packing a load of dishes to the sink! So, they aren't just bad poeple who pack a huge rifle slung from their backs and looking for a fight! I think some can learn from Mr. Foxworthy who if my memeory serves me correctly, claimed to be a red-kneck, or was that his brother and in-laws? big grin big grin
