“Hey!” I turned and saw Clark behind me. He bent down and gave me a quick kiss on the cheek. “Love that dress. Prada?”
“No, Banana Republic, but I’ll take the upgrade.” What had I been thinking? He was definitely gay, and completely full of it.”

I already know from my research that Prada is more luxuries than Banana Republic (as a hetero male I couldn't care less though Wink ) but what does she mean by "I'll take the upgrade". Does she mean "thanks for the compliment" or "I would love to upgrade to a Prada dress if I could" or what do you suggest?
TIA
Michal

I think she means either "I would love to upgrade to a Prada dress if I could" or "I will accept any mistakes in how another sees my choice of clothes as long as it is a mistake that indicates I have better (i.e. more expensive) clothes." This, however, is only my opinion; I don't think that everyone will agreee with what I say here. It's a difficult sentence to be sure of what was intended.

I think she feels that it was a compliment but an empty one.

“Love that dress. Prada?” is sort of a compliment. It was obviously he was just trying to be nice and she knew as well as he did that it was NOT a Prada.

“No, Banana Republic, but I’ll take the upgrade.” means that she WISHES whe had a Prada.

She thought for a minute he was sincere and then realized he wasn't. She said: What had I been thinking? He was definitely gay, and completely full of it.” He was full of it because he knew as well as she did that it wasn't a Prada.

* Just so you know a basic Banana Republic dress can start at around $150.00; a Prada dress costs about $800.00 and can cost up into the thousands.

Just to help with your English, Michal,
"I already know from my research that Prada is more luxuries than Banana Republic"

"luxuries" (a noun) should read "luxurious" (an adjective)
