In the dictionary for toward, it says "also towards." Are these really interchangable words?

Yup, they're just the same. 'Toward' might be more common in British English, and 'towards' in American (or is it the other way around...).

I'd use 'towards' for movement: " He was moving towards the table" but use 'toward' for something static: "The table was set so it was toward the wall". That said, 'towards'is far commoner in Britain.
