Why is a person who gives someone something, then takes it back, called an Indian Giver? It really seems he ought to be called a white person, or European, or paleface, giver. These are the ones who took the land from the Indians, gave some of it back to them forever. (Forever meaning until they wanted it back, either to settle on or because someone had found gold.) So, they took the land, gave some of it back, then took that back. The reverse of the meaning of the term.

I totally agree with you Bibleman. Maybe someone can explain the term to us.

This phrase derives from the alleged practice of American Indians of giving back something of greater value whenever they received a gift.

I do agree with Bibleman's analysis, though!
