I thought it was spelt ' peroquial ' but I cannot find any reference to it.

Does 'parochial' sound right ? While you really should look it up for youself, I will tell you that it means pertaining to a parish, or a small group, and, by extension, pertaining to a limited group, area, outlook, etc. Many private schools are parochial schools, and many small towns have parochial attitudes. I'm guessing that you are from the UK or Canada. If so, think of it as a sometime synonym for provincial.
