What is meant by 'a marquee club' in this context? The piece is about the finances of European soccer teams: " Benfica has a low profit on its turnover compared to that of other clubs. It is far less than that of the marquee clubs Manchester United and Real Madrid"
Marquee evidently has a different meaning in American: in British a marquee is a large tent erected on a lawn for a wedding reception or party. The word would not be used as an adjectival noun in any case.
Fred, my Funk and Wagnalls Standard College Dictionary, 1963: 1.marquee:A canopy, usually heavy and made of metal, used as a signboard and shelter over the sidewalk in front of a theater, hotal, etc. 2. A large field tent, as one used for outdoor parties.
