What is the origin of the phrase "Let sleeping dogs lie".

this phrase is also attributed to Geoffrey Chaucer (1374). (Troillus and Criseyde.) in the form "It is not good to let a sleeping hound wake." Whether this came before or after the Italian proverb I don't know.
