Is Spanish the official language of the Phillipines?

Do many people speak it there?

There are a number of languages spoken in the Philipines. Spanish has pretty much died out, but some words exist in Tagalog, the base language of Filipino, one of the two official languages. English is the other.

The reason I ask is that the obviously east Asian man in the movie "Gremlins" speaks a language that sounds an awful lot like Spanish to the furry little animals. I was wondering if it actually was Spanish for some bizarre directors choice or because some Asian language sounded very similar to Spanish.

My first guess was that it was just a goofy version of Spanish but then I wondered if maybe the man was Phillopino and their language was Spanish or something similar.
