I have seen another posting on Google define fortitudo as strength But the 2nd posting in this link says Bravery which feels better suited Fortitude (the modern spelling) The M/W gives it as STRENGTH double click on the word "fortitude" to see the result It's the way you look at it. One dictionary may go strength another may go bravery? It seems to be a "cover several terms" word? By the way Welcome to the Pool Ps This is the best meta dictionary search engines findings on fortitude Slight difference of "strength" ,says its of the mind and the original word... confusing isn't it? Fortitudo is related to the Latin word fortis, strong. It came to mean steadfastness, strength in that sense, or moral strength. So an oak tree, or a man who stood strong had fortitudo. It does not convey bravery or courage in the sense of, say, storming an enemy positiion. It is more static than that´, more a question of standing strongly, not collapsing.
