I believe (but can't prove) that
it would be Hector, the oldest
son of Priam, a Trojan cheiftain
in Homer's Iliad.

Here's some proof, dogspit! There was nothing worthwhile on Google, if you can believe that. But AltaVista came through. According to The Word Dectective (To Helen back.), it's both the Iliad's Hector and a popular dog name in the 1920s.
