Here's some proof, dogspit! There was nothing worthwhile on Google, if you can believe that. But AltaVista came through. According to The Word Dectective (To Helen back.), it's both the Iliad's Hector and a popular dog name in the 1920s. "You've heard the phrase..." I grew up in California, and this is the first time I've ever heard it!
