In many placenames in Scotland I have noticed the word Cleuch used a Lot If it was south of the Border I'd see clough (a valley or gulley ) or in the extreme south "chine"= same as Clough
But as far as I can make out these "Cleuch" places are in varying terrain

So What does it refer to? Confused

Hi Bedstor,
I think it is Scottish for a ravine.

Have a look at this site:
Walking in Scotland

Have a look at this site too:

Glossary of Scots origins of place names in Britain

Here they say the name 'cleuch' is a derivation of 'cleugh,' meaning gorge, ravine, cliff, or crag. Confused

Can't do. We all know that Clough means 'man who walked on water ' in Nottingham Smile
