I tend to write down words I don't recognize and look them up at a later date. I just found a piece of paper with the word: pudulism. It is written on a paper from the training office so I must have seen it there. What does this word mean? Pudulism

bear with us... some finds
quote:
pudify v 1656 -1656
to cause to be ashamed
Your remarks do not pudify me, for you are as guilty of such offenses as I am!

Sounds like its similar to "Loss of face" Japanese origin

As for the original spelling Is unknown on the Best dictionary site which searches countless volumes But there is a Near lookalike word your spelling Pudulism My find is Paludism which means
quote:
The morbid phenomena produced by dwelling among marshes; malarial disease or disposition.

(This definition is from the 1913 Webster's Dictionary and may be outdated.)
Note the last part of the quote.
Maybe something else, but there is no different definition on the links here. They all tally

The only result from a search for that word on Google shows it to be an obvious mishearing of the word "pugilism". Go ahead and Google it and see.

It is possible that I overheard someone say the word and just misspelled it when I wrote it down. I'm not sure why someone would be discussing boxing in the training room. Confused I could be wrong. Actually, I'm wrong often.

P.S. Shut up Dorian. Razz

Clare, the word "peudalism" rings a bell with me, but I can't find it in the dictionary.

Hopefully someone else will know if it's a word - or just a figment of my imagination!

I looked for both words, pudalism and peudalism, in my Oxford Universal, which is good for archaic words, too. No joy. But if it was coined, it might be as follows:

peu - from the French, meaning not many, or small
dal - from the Hindi, meaning a legume from the East Indies
ism - meaning a form of doctrine or practice.

So if you even want to express the concept of following the practice of eating few dulse legumes, there it is, ready for action.

I guess I can even add it to my list of -isms, too. Hmmm. I adhere to the principle of peudalism.

But wait! The word "peu" can also mean "small"!
So to legume-lovers everywhere, there would be a tendency to insist that 'small' is the correct interpretation! You can eat all the pulse you want, so long as you only eat small ones!

Damn! The word is hardly coined when we have a schism, and subsequest heresy accusations, etc. Mad

I think my nephew might be a pudulist - out walking, he always heads for the biggest one and jumps right into it. He can't spell yet.

I once was with a guy who I thought was a pudulist. He was whacked so I left him. Wink

Or maybe peudalism is just a variant spelling of pheudalism, which was an economic-political system in Eurjope from the 9th to the late middle ages.
