I keep reading this word. For example, the New York Times this morning talks about this "perfect emo-girl." What the heck is an emo-girl? My cell phone has a whole section called "emo" that has cartoon characters. I don't understand any of this. I think it is part of teen culture, and I have no idea what it is. Is my hair getting grey, or what?

It's become a pretty overused term. It's also misunderstood and thrown around by many.
Newnick's link is a respectable site for information on it. It defines the original meaning - a type of punk music. There's a good link to some audio in there too now.
The term has grown into something much larger lately: a popularized subculture.

An emo-girl is someone who cries a lot and falls in love easily. She usually wears really thick eyeliner and those chunky bangs that fall in her face. She is very emotional and possibly suicidal. (most likely a cutter) I think they are just whiney kids who don't know how great their life really is. They always looking for attention and always say how much their life sucks.
Note- I keep editing this because my son keeps correcting me. He said this post is pretty accurate.

That's kind of the more stereotypical emo kid. I find that emo the culture isn't defined by the 'emotional' characteristic.
If a lot of suicidal kids happen to be suicidal, I think it's because the culture appeals to those kinds of kids (it is after all the latest below radar subculture.)

Hot Topic caters to just about anything counterculture (or psuedo-counterculture). "Emo" falls into that but not so much the other way around.
Your son is falling prey to the popular throwing around of the term. It's done by both the kids who call themsleves emo and the kids who realize how overly trendy it's become. This culture is the latest anti-popular society subculture. And in that, a lot of the kids probably do whine and bitch about their situation (maybe not so much their entire life) more than they should.

This is her son. I have this arguments with too many of my friends already. I find it cliche to even bring up the arguments of what emo is. It is an overly used term to describe a type of music that is a clash between original punk rock music and a new breed of music brought by bands of the punk rock nature using lyrics that are either depressing or generic.

Well that sounds agreeable, Clare's son. It does get old to hear about it. The lyrics seem to be more often generic than depressing, but I'd say you said it just right actually.
