“Hey!” I turned and saw Clark behind me. He bent down and gave me a quick kiss on the cheek. “Love that dress. Prada?” “No, Banana Republic, but I’ll take the upgrade.” What had I been thinking? He was definitely gay, and completely full of it.”
I already know from my research that Prada is more luxuries than Banana Republic (as a hetero male I couldn't care less though ) but what does she mean by "I'll take the upgrade". Does she mean "thanks for the compliment" or "I would love to upgrade to a Prada dress if I could" or what do you suggest? TIA Michal
I think she means either "I would love to upgrade to a Prada dress if I could" or "I will accept any mistakes in how another sees my choice of clothes as long as it is a mistake that indicates I have better (i.e. more expensive) clothes." This, however, is only my opinion; I don't think that everyone will agreee with what I say here. It's a difficult sentence to be sure of what was intended.

I think she feels that it was a compliment but an empty one.
“Love that dress. Prada?” is sort of a compliment. It was obviously he was just trying to be nice and she knew as well as he did that it was NOT a Prada.
“No, Banana Republic, but I’ll take the upgrade.” means that she WISHES whe had a Prada.
She thought for a minute he was sincere and then realized he wasn't. She said: What had I been thinking? He was definitely gay, and completely full of it.” He was full of it because he knew as well as she did that it wasn't a Prada.
* Just so you know a basic Banana Republic dress can start at around $150.00; a Prada dress costs about $800.00 and can cost up into the thousands.
