I call it my daughter's birthday. It isn't celebrated in the US. Not enough servants to box presents for.

"Not enough servants to box presents for."

Boy, isn't that the truth. There just aren't enough good servants to go around. Whatever is the world coming to? (And don't even get me started on the lack of serfs. Oy!)

Nope. The end of feudalism was a bitch.

Don't you have paperboys and girls, milkmen, postmen, cleaners etc in the US, then? Big Grin We are expected to give some cash to all of them in our village .

The French have a more subtle approach. A firefighter will arrive at your door at Christmas, bearing a free calendar. You are supposed to 'buy' it, giving a donation. The first year that this happened to me in Antibes I didn't know the custom , so I took the 'free' calendar with thanks and closed the door. When I discovered the truth I spent the next twelve months wondering whether my home would mysteriously catch fire Big Grin

Yes, we do have paper boys, mail delivery people, janitors, etc. In my apartment I have three maintenance people, 1 paper delivery person, a mail person (I call him/her a postman), and we are expected to pay out seasonal bribes or tips if we expect to live in relative peace and security. We just do it all before Christmas and the choice of day is flexible but close enough to qualify as Christmas gifts. My desk calendar says Dec 26 is Boxing Day in Canada. Milkmen have gone the way of the horse drawn delivery wagon. Get your milk at the supermarket or convenience store.

You may not believe this, but my "paperboy" is a professor of philosophy at the university where I teach. Guess it shows we have lousy salaries, so how can I afford to tip her?
