Utopie in French, "Greek" origin U= OU meaning NO!
And "Topos" meaning "place".(non-lieu)

Word describing ,in phylosophy,ideal society and it's ways of work ,but "imaginary" conceived by "an" author!

Usual term for something that seems too good to be true, or seems almost impossible.

I have seen some authors spell it "eutopia," the prefix "eu-" meaning "good." Perhaps this somehow mutated to "utopia"? Wish I had an OED!

http://elf.chaoscafe.com/more/ It's the title of a book by Thomas More, written in 1516. As mozart56 said, it means 'no place'. The book describes an ideal society - so the title is pessimistic.
