What is meant by 'a marquee club' in this context? The piece is about the finances of European soccer teams: " Benfica has a low profit on its turnover compared to that of other clubs. It is far less than that of the marquee clubs Manchester United and Real Madrid"

Marquee evidently has a different meaning in American: in British a marquee is a large tent erected on a lawn for a wedding reception or party. The word would not be used as an adjectival noun in any case.

Famous, well-known. From the signs on theaters advertising the film or broadway show playing. A marquee event is one that gets a lot of publicity.
