Update:re Hazel Blears (I got her name wrong before; her publicity agent can't be as good as she would want, headlines or no

) anyway the Sorcerer's Apprentice in waiting, that deputy's deputy, whose 'idea' this scheme was.
Number 10 ( the office of the Prime Minister, the Big Boss ) insisted yesterday that this is
not an official government proposal. "Insiders grumbled that Mrs Blears had lifted the entire concept from a
Guardian [national broadsheet newspaper,of the Left ] article and blurted it out in an interview with
The Times without clearing the notion with her colleagues " writes the
Daily Mail At least this shows that she reads the newspapers

The
Daily Mail mischievously points out that , for something not approved of as a proposal, it is odd to find it yesterday still being publicised on the Government's own website. (Mrs Blears had probably had it put there ). Those of us who tend to the view that statements that attract ridicule or bad responses are left as being idle inventions or speculation by the author, remain suspicious. Those statements that are accepted widely, however unexpectedly, are naturally claimed by the bosses as theirs (as said before here). This proposal fell easily into the former category and is disowned.
