I saw an earlier post from 11/16/2002 about Norton Firewall and IE6 with sp1. I also have Win ME. I have tried everything you suggested. I uninstalled both norton antivirus and the firewall. I reinstalled IE 6 SP 1. I still have red x's. My red x's are where banners are suppose to be and some pictures. Also, after uninstalling the firewall, I can no longer play any "web games". On Popcap I just get a blank white page and in my Real Arcade the page won't finish loading. Some pages will say "Action Cancelled". I am out of options. PLEASE help. Thanks
[This message was edited by Leesa on 01-05-03 at 12:59 AM.] ******************************************************* 01-05-03, 02:05 AM Dwight Can you right click on the box with the X and then left click on "Show Pictures"? Does that cause the picture to load?
Please verify that you have set the "Show Picture" option in the Internet Options, Advanced Tab.
I.E. / Tools / Internet Options / Advanced tab / Multimedia / Show Pictures
Dwight ******************************************************* 01-05-03, 04:34 AM Leesa No the pics won't load when I right click. Yes my " show pictures" option is checked.

I LOVE THEM!!! Big Grin ******************************************************* 01-05-03, 01:52 PM Dwight Leesa , let me see if I'm understanding you correctly. You're seeing some pictures on a page, but not all of them. Is that correct?
Do you see these three?
This is an animated .gif picture.
This is a .gif file.
This is a .jpg file. Please let us know if you're seeing any of these images.
Thanks, Dwight ******************************************************* 01-05-03, 03:14 PM Leesa Dwight, Yes I see all 3 of them. My son was on uproar this morning and in certain places on the screen there was a white box that said,"action canceled". When I right clicked it and checked the properties,it and all others like it made reference to, C:\windows\system\shdoclc.dll. Would this be where my problem is?
I still have the red x's in white boxes. Those appear to have something to do with HyperText Transfer Protocol(?). They are banner ads. Thanks for all your help Leesa ******************************************************* 01-05-03, 07:23 PM Dwight I can't say what the problem is, maybe TomGL2 could add his expertise here.
Have you tried closing everything and restarting your computer? If not, please try that.
The file "shdoclc.dll" defines the size of the Internet Explorer Help menu, 'About Internet Explorer' screen, among many other things. In any event, it is an Internet Explorer file, so yes it might be a factor. If restarting doesn't fix the problem, perhaps you can rename the file to "shdoclc.old" and then run the Internet Explorer Repair Tool and see if it fixes the problem. Post back and I'll give you the details about this.
After restarting, please go to a site that has given you this problem and see if there is any change. If the problem still exists, please post the Web address of the page(s) where you're seeing this problem. Two or three problem pages would be helpful.
A quick way to copy/paste a Web address is:
With the Web page open in Internet Explorer, press the Alt key and the "D" key together (at the same time). You will note the URL in the address bar becomes highlighted.
Then press the Ctrl key and the "C" keys together. This copies the address. Then paste into your reply screen using the Ctrl key and the "V" key.
Hopefully we'll get to the bottom of this problem!
By the way, this page has more "keyboard shortcuts". You can print it out and keep it by your keyboard for quick reference.
[This message was edited by Dwight on 01-05-03 at 07:48 PM.] ******************************************************* 01-05-03, 08:17 PM Leesa On the top of the tucows page there is supposed to be a banner but I see "action canceled" same on the left side by the scroll bar. http://www.tucows.com/
http://whatis.techtarget.com/ On this page "action canceled" is seen on top right and on right side under What's New box.
I find the boxes with the red x's on this page. (www.answerpool.com) Left side under EBay ad and above TV Guide ad. Also top of page where banner would be.
Let me know if theres anything else I can do to help.
Thank you very much Dwight.
Leesa Big Grin ******************************************************* 01-05-03, 09:27 PM Leesa I think I found the problem!!! I went to the Symantec support page and looked up Norton Firewall 2003. This program is the one I uninstalled. It has AD Blocking.
What the Ad Blocking feature does:
Speeds up your Web surfing capability by eliminating banner ads and other slow-loading or intrusive content Blocks ads made with Macromedia Flash Prevent sites from opening pop-up or pop-under ad windows Blocks ads by preventing your Web browser from displaying specific HTML strings Has Configure Ad Blocking settings for each user (Must have Supervisor rights)
What the Ad Blocking feature does not do: Block all advertisements on the Internet Block text-based or script-based advertisements
Now....seeing as it is uninstalled why is it still giving me trouble??? How do I fix something like this????
Any Ideas?
Thanks Leesa Confused ******************************************************* 01-05-03, 11:03 PM Dwight Good job tracking this down! Usually, the best way to solve this type of problem is to reinstall the software. When reinstalled, set the *Options/Preferences you want, then uninstall the program again.
*In this case, the preference you want is Ad blocking - Off.
Dwight ******************************************************* 01-06-03, 03:23 PM Leesa Dwight, Thanks for all your suggestions and help. I guess I was wrong about the firewall because I reinstalled it and made sure everything was turned off, I then uninstalled and guess what?....NOTHING!
Im going crazy! I can't believe this machine is kicking my butt.
Can you think of anything else that would cause this??
Thanks again Leesa Eek Confused ******************************************************* 01-06-03, 04:00 PM Dwight Just a guess, but I wonder if you need to reset your Internet Explorer Internet Options back to their original or "default" values. You can try that and see what happens. Just click the various tabs and use the "Default Level", "Restore Default", or "Reset Web Settings" buttons.
You should probably restart the computer before giving this another try.
Dwight ******************************************************* 01-07-03, 06:20 PM Leesa Still no luck. Do you think This is something I would be able to fix or do I need to take my computer in to somebody??
Thanks Leesa ******************************************************* 01-07-03, 07:56 PM soaringhorse Leesa, Check one more thing out, in your internet options, under privacy tab, do you have it set to medium, or higher. It is probably best at medium. That's what I've got mine set on, and its the default. ******************************************************* 01-07-03, 08:30 PM Leesa soaringhorse, My security options are set at medium. I even tried low and that didn't help. I've tweaked with the different options on individual things in security with no luck as well.
I even tried the restore option to set it back to the way it was before the firewall download.
I'm running out of options. Frown
Thanks for the suggestion Big Grin
Leesa ******************************************************* 01-08-03, 10:32 PM Dixie Leesa, I see exactly the same things that you do when I go to "tucows, techtarget, and answerpool." My security is set on medium, too. I don't have a popup stopper, but I do have Norton. ******************************************************* 01-08-03, 10:40 PM Dwight Well, I confess I'm at a loss to know why this isn't working right. I'm suspecting the Norton and I think you should contact their technical support and see if they can assist you with this.
Keep going with this until you can either email or telephone the tech support people. Hopefully they can fix this.
If you take this to a computer technician they will probably want to reformat and then reinstall your Operating System. That would mean having to reinstall everything, which is not bad, but very time consuming. In any event, you can do the reformat, restore as a final option.
Also, TomGL2 had an excellent post about removing the Windows files and then restoring them. This way all your data files are not harmed.
You might consider doing that as well. This is a long thread, but it does explain everything in great detail.
The problem is different, but possibly the same fix might work. To better stay on focus, I suggest you ignore the posts (on the linked page) other than TomGL2's as he outlines the steps to take.
I'm sorry I could not help you with this.
Dwight ******************************************************* 01-08-03, 10:56 PM Dixie I have even disabled Norton, and it is still the same. Also, at work, I don't even have virus protection, and it is the same. It couldn't be Norton with it being the same on the other computer.
[This message was edited by Dixie on 01-08-03 at 11:04 PM.] ******************************************************* 01-09-03, 12:19 AM Dwight Dixie's post makes me think it may be a script problem then. If the work computer (no Norton) and home computer don't show the ads, maybe the Microsoft VM (Virtual Machine) files are bad or missing.
Dwight posted a note directing me to this problem, but I've not yet had the time to investigate it in much depth. As a result, I'm going to suggest a somewhat "shotgun" approach (for now).
First, obtain the latest version of Windows Script, and install it.
Uninstall IE6 SP1. To do this, open the Add/Remove Programs tool in the Control Panel, then double-click "Microsoft Internet Explorer 6..." and choose "Restore previous Windows configuration". After restarting the computer, open Internet Explorer (you may remain offline), click Help and"About Internet Explorer". Verify that version 5.5 is now installed.
Install Internet Explorer 5.5 SP2. Reinstall Windows Script 5.6. Run LiveUpdate and obtain any program updates for the Norton antivirus and firewall.
Check the problem websites to see if the problem is resolved.
Do you have dial-up connection? ==================================================== 01-09-03, 11:18 PM Dixie I installed the Windows Updates (as suggested by Dwight) and Windows Script (TomGL2). I tried to uninstall IE6, but it said that the uninstall was not successful. I then had to repair IE, because all the pages that I went to were blank. I am still seeing little red x's. All the ideas have been good, though. Keep them coming. This is very frustrating. ==================================================== 01-10-03, 08:40 AM soaringhorse This may be the answer, the reason the red x's are showing up is there is a problem with the site that's advertising them. Therefore it's not your computer, just that the links are bad. I've come to this conclusion after I went through the same questions as you did. Read Byter's reply on 11/29/02. My Post ==================================================== 01-10-03, 09:27 AM Dixie Attn: Dwight I could have sworn that the advertisements didn't come up on work computer that has no virus protection. I was wrong. Also, I tried another computer with McAffee, and they show up there just fine. I am sorry for the added confusion. Maybe it is the Norton after all. ==================================================== 01-10-03, 10:33 AM Leesa I followed directions up to restart the computer. On restart I have a blank desk top and no icons or tool bars. I am unable to go any where or do anything on the computer. Ctrl,Alt,Delete shows nothing running. My dad is sending this to you so we can try to resolve the problum. I did get a error msg saying something like xxxxxx Browser.dll is corrupt or missing. Any ideas on where to go from here. ==================================================== 01-10-03, 11:46 AM bertmary Leesa, I don't know that much about computers, but try this if you haven't already: Unplug the computer, and then plug it back in. If anything comes up, and you still have problems, go to Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel. Then, click on Internet Explorer. Click on Add/Remove, then look at top and choose "repair IE." Maybe that will help. I had all sorts of problems after I did updates, etc. Good luck, Dixie (I forgot to sign in w/ my name, am on someone else's computer.

[This message was edited by bertmary on 01-10-03 at 11:56 AM.] ==================================================== 01-10-03, 07:59 PM Leesa TomGL@ I followed the directions up till hte restarting of the computer. On restart I get a blank desktop no icons and no tool bars. I am able to do nothing with the unit. As it re-started I got a msg that said some browser dll was missing or corrupt. When I push Ctrl, Alt, Delete it shows nothing is running. Even in safe mode I can not get to the restore files. Any ideas on where to go from here. Is it posable to put in another HD and boot with that and asign this one as a slave. Maybe getting in to save the data before a reformat? ==================================================== 01-10-03, 08:32 PM Dixie Leesa, when I did all that, I had a mess too. Not as bad as yours, though. When mine restarted, there was that little flashing light at the top left and nothing else would come up, just a black screen. I unplugged the computer and was able to get the desktop again. When I would go to the internet though, the page would come up blank, completely white. Also, the little "earth" that spins in the top right when something is loading began to go up and down, like a chain of earths. Really scary. I believe that parts of Internet Explorer got deleted somehow in all that I did. As I said before, I went to Add/Remove Programs and clicked on Internet Explorer, then Add/Remove. You then have a choice of things to do. I chose "repair IE" and that did the trick. ==================================================== 01-10-03, 09:42 PM TomGL2 Obviously there is more than one problem here, and repairing your Windows installation would be a good idea. Initially, though, it should be possible to extract the original Windows 98 versions of the browselc.dll and browseui.dll files.
To do this, insert a Windows Startup floppy in its drive and restart the computer. The system should boot from the floppy (if not, post again). Choose "Start computer with CD-ROM support". The CD drive letter will be one higher than usual.
At the A:\> prompt, insert the Windows CD in its drive, then type these commands, pressing Enter after each --
When done, remove the floppy and press Ctl-Alt-Del to restart the computer. Obtain a new copy of Internet Explorer 5.5 SP2 by downloading and running IE5Setup.exe. ==================================================== 01-10-03, 09:51 PM TomGL2 A couple of notes: Don't type the text in the brackets (they're comments); each line which begins "Extract" and ends ".DLL" must be entered as a single line.
