Here's my problem. I'm starting off with relatively large (over 1 meg) JPG files. They look good on my screen; my screen setting is "True Color." But when I save (using Microsoft Photo Editor) as GIFs, the image degrades severely.

I know that GIFs are limited to 256 colors, and that would probably be OK. But I find that my images are being saved with perhaps 100-125 colors in GIF. So they look grainy and splotchy. Any way I can force it to save using more colors? As I say, I'm starting off with a good JPG with many colors, so why is it reducing them down to 100-125, rather than close to 256?

"If you have Microsoft Office 97, then you have a copy of MS Photo Editor. If you don't, then most cheap scanners come with some kind of image manipulation program. MS Photo Editor is fine for basic images and especially good for converting photos to JPG. The program is less good with GIF files, as will be explained later. For this reason, all the screen shots are in greyscale on this page. "
You may need to a use different Photo Editor
