Sammy, do you have an editing program? Something like Picture Editor?

If you do, you can open that picture editing program, bring up the photo, then edit as you want. You can cut out stuff on the edges you don't want, make it sharper and less blurry, fix the colors so that they are brighter, that sort of thing.

When you are done doing to it what you want, there is an option on most programs to resize. (This is good to do since it makes the saved files smaller and easier to send and doesn't take so long to send or receive.)

Then you save it. You choose "save as" and you can change the name to what you want to call it AND you can choose the FORMAT. This is where jpeg or "jpg" comes in. There are other formats that save as larger images.. like BMP, etc. JPG just compresses the data smaller so it doesn't take up as much room.

I hope this helps a bit.

Here is a site that may help a bit about what the different formats are (but ignore the last paragraphs advice of keeping images BMP unless you want to send big files).

Sammy, you scanned the image and it went to your computer right?

Most people have an editing program on their computer. Do you have one?

Most scanners will allow you to set the parameters. In other words, you can set the scanned picture to come out as a .jpeg
Here's the page on how to set it up.

IrfanView is an exceptionally good free image viewer. It not only converts between about 20 different types, but also resizes images very well. You might, for example, have a .BMP picture that's 1280x960. Irfan could convert is to snapshot size (say, 600x450), and resave it in .JPG format.

Foir what it's worth, Samantha, I use Irfanview and recommend it. I find that 800 x 600 pixels is a useful size for sending pictures in e-mail. It's one of the standard sizes Irfanview offers with just one click.

After resizing, I select "Save as". It shows me the file name, and I just add "a" to it, change the format to .jpg if necessary and save. Then I have the old file intact and the new resized .jpg one as well.

When I had to reinstall my scanner I went looking high and low for the disk that contains the editing program. Could not find it and thought I had lost the disk. Not - The editing program was on the same disk as the software to install the scanner.
Might be worth a look.

Samantha, I'll assume IrfanView is installed in the default location. Please follow this procedure --

Click Start, Run, type Sendto and press Enter to open the SendTo folder. Click File, point to New, and click Shortcut.

In Command line, type

"C:\Program Files\IrfanView\i_view32.exe"

including the quotes. Click Next, type IrfanView, and click Finish. Close the folder.

To open a file with IrfanView, right-click the file, point to Send To, and click IrfanView.

Samantha, what are you talking about? IrfanView is absolutely, unquestionably FREE. It doesn't need to be registered, and the author doesn't even want an e-mail address.

I've been using various versions of this program for years, and there have never been limitations in its usage.

Just run the installer iview385.exe and use the default settings. Create a shortcut in the SendTo folder as described earlier.

Right-click any JPEG file, point to Send To, and click IrfanView. Click Image and Resize/Resample. Verify that Preserve aspect ratio is selected.

Note the values for width and height, change the greater of the two to anything between 400 and 800, and click OK.

Click File, Save as, enter a filename and choose a file type (GIF, JPG), browse to the destination folder, and click Save.

A site you could try You could try is: http://www.gif.com/

They have many online Picture editing programs and everything you need to know about gifs and jpegs!

Use JPEG For:
Most photographic images and continuous-tone art that contain subtle shifts in color

Avoid JPEG With:
Text or graphics that contain detailed edges

Use GIF For:
Graphics containing limited numbers of colors, or intricate detail that you want to maintain
Floating graphics from the page
Creating a simple animation (with the latest GIF file format)
Browser-safe colors--colors that won't dither or change when viewed on an 8-bit monitor

Avoid GIF With:
Large photographic images or illustrations that contain a lot of color, unless you want to create a floating effect

Hope this helps Smile
