Hi pupper:
First let me welcome you to AnswerPool, Glad you made it.

Now for your problem with the dreaded X-Box. Eek Mad

Usually there's nothing you can do about them as it is not a problem with you machine.
You'll see these if you browser can't find the picture at the address specified on the page you're viewing.

It could be that the creater of the page you're seeing this hasn't uploaded the picture file yet or has miss-spelled it's adderss.

Here's an example of a picture that resides on my webspace:

Now heres near the same address but with a spelling error.:

Since your browser could find the first picture it should show up fine.
The second doesn't exist as spelt so shows up as the box with the red X.

Again Welcome.
Mike b. (AKA Byter)

PS you've probably noticed, I know all about
rotten spelling Razz Wink

Hi Pupper, I have had this same problem occur when running IE 6 SP 2, with Windows Me. Don't know why, but when I use IE 5, I have no problems. What operating system do you have, and what Internet Explorer version is it?

Welcome to AnswerPool vick23fred . I hope your visit here will be beneficial.

The first thing I want to mention is that the problem could very well be with the Webpage, not with your computer.

As Byter demonstrated in his answer above, that if the Webpage author made a slight spelling error with the pathway or filename, your Web browser cannot find the picture. The picture doesn't exist at the specified address.

You said that some images worked, but some did not. Can you give us an example of a Webpage that you cannot get the pictures to show? If you would provide a Web address we could verify if the images on that page are working correctly on other computers.

If you computer is at fault, the problem is probably within Internet Explorer. In Windows 98 and I.E. 6 there is a built in repair tool that you might try.

To run the tool click:

1. Start

2. Run

3. Type in: msinfo32

4. Click OK

This action will start the Microsoft System Information Utility program.

5. In the System Information Utility program click the Tools menu.

6. Click the "Repair Internet Explorer" command.

7. Choose to repair the Internet Explorer program.

8. I the utility asks you for permission to download new files to replace damaged or corrupted files, please click "Yes".

9. When complete, the utility will require a restart and will prompt you.

10. Upon restart, the utility will complete the repair process.

Note 1. If the I.E. installation cannot be repaired, it will advise you. You can reinstall the program using the:

ie6setup.exe

file.

Do a search for the file:

Start/Find --> All folders and files

When the file is found (there may be more than one) double click on it and it will be begin reinstalling IE. It may ask for permission to download new files (it probably will) so please give it permission.

Note 2. During the initial repair attempt, you will be offered a chance to "Revert" back to a previous version of IE. If after attempting repair and attempting reinstall, the problem persists, it may be a good idea to revert to the IE 5.5 version. Once that is up and running well, you can try the upgrade to version 6 again.

I certainly hope something here will help. I suggest you give us a couple of Web addresses where you're having problems with images before going to the trouble of repairing or reinstalling I.E.

By the way, here are a couple of Web addresses for my site. I know the .jpg and .gif images are working correctly on these pages:

Yours,

Dwight

Can you right click on the image and click the option "Show Picture"? Does that make the image appear?

If it does, click on the Tools menu/Internet Options/Advanced tab

In the advanced section under "multimedia" check the option: Show Pictures. Click OK and then click the test page: Please use http://dwightblackburn.com for your test since we know the images are working correctly on this page.

If it was previously unchecked this should now allow pictures to display normally.

If it was checked and the images do not show up, there may be a problem with your computers ability to recognize file types. Double click on any graphic (picture) file and see if will open correctly. If so, please let me know and also what type of image file it is that will not display.

If you don't have a handy image to open, try this one as a download: click here You may not see the image, but it is on the top left side of the page. Right click in that area and choose "save target as". If you don't see the "save target as" option, just right click in another area on the top left side of the page. When you do see the "save target as" option, select it and save frustration.jpg to your desktop. When it completes the download, try opening the image to see if it displays correctly.

If you're not seeing the (usually) 3-letter file extension, here is how you can set your system so that it will show the file extension.

Right-click on my computer. Choose "Explore"

In the Windows Explorer window, click the "Tools" menu, then the "Folder Options" selection.

In the folder Options windows select the view tab. Locate the option to "Hide file extension for known file types". Uncheck the option and click OK.

Now you should see what type of file you're trying to look at.

Please let us know what you find with these steps. Please be very careful to state exactly what you have done. For instance, please number what you did as step 1, then step 2 etcetera.

The reason for this is that will help determine if the problem is with the computer or with some step along the way to complete the process.

Thank you for your patience.

Dwight
