I have Word 97(OS XP) and when I try to insert clip art I get the message that "artgal50.mmc is irrepairably corrupted and I should delete it or rename it" - no can do. I cannot find it.
Searching with "*.mmc" I find CAGCAT.mmc. This file has clipart - but it's only about 30 items.
Not what I am looking for.
The files I want are on the Word CD and I could get them from there - but it is not searchable.
Word 97 is part of a 5 CD set I bought way back when (98). The same set also contains a greeting card maker. This program will load but then says "Something is missing - reinstall."
That does not help and no other details are given. I think the two problems are related. I would really like to be able to use the card making program. Any one know how to find "artgal50.mmc". Also - everytime I remove/ reinstall either Word or Greeting the Serial number changes - I have the original CD Key.
Any ideas. Thanks in advance! MKS

The Artgal50.mmc file is the Clip Gallery v5 catalog file. Office 97 uses Clip Gallery v3, but if someone has installed ClipGallery v5 on the machine at some point, (by installing MS Works 5 or 6 or an Office 2000 app, such as Photodraw 2000) then uninstalled it, Clip Gallery 3 may not reinstall

try running Artgalry.exe by goimg to Start| Run and typing in Artgalry.exe
and then in Word see what happens if you use Insert | Clipart.

If you get that same error then use Start | Find and look for CAG.exe and see if you can run it
from the search results and also right click it and look at the Properties to see what version it is.
The usual location would be
C:\Documents and Settings\\Application Data\Microsoft\Media Catalog\Artgal50.mmc

Bingo, putsasolution! That is exactly correct. I have Works 7 installed. The clipart works just fine there. I don't use Works. I even forgot it is there. It came preinstalled. It is in a folder named "Bundle" before the "Program Files" Folder.
I have a 100Gig hard drive and I didn't think it could interfere with anything, so I left it.
Now - If I remove Works will the correct Clip art for Word 97 and the Greetings program load?
Works is kind of useless. The world and it's cousin uses MS Word - that's what you need for submitting files in School.
So - If I bought MS Word 2003, I have been thinking of that(academic vers.Word,Exell,Power Point), I would still have the same problem. Correct? The clip art gallary that the card program needs won't load.
The solution seems to be to get a different card program. Now at least I can give up gracefully -
I know why it wont't work. Billy Gates - I don't like you. Thank's for clearing this up. MKS

Not necessarily unfortunately, there would be a comnsiderable amount of messing in the registry to get it to see it or by unistalling all the M$products and then reinstalling Word. You could try a repair install, but I haven't seen may successful ones Frown

If you do have the option of installing Word 2003, then do so. Its an infinitely better program and although a little top heavy, it is far more stable
