The "Funny colors" I'd guess are due to a possible magnetic source such as a speaker being close to the monitor The flicking could be a loose connection or your mouse cable is wrapped around the speaker or monitor cables Wink
Ok to "fix" the Color do this (easy)
Open the control panel display on your Monitor move the wheel or button until you come to the item which will be the icon of a Magnet or say either DeGauss or Demagnetize
Press the Enter button or whatever and the screen will Blank with a loud click (Like it does when switching on)
Any better? Repeat 2 or 3 times if there is no diference then get somebody to adjust the Color temperature on the Monitor or reset it to the Factory settings (Is on the Monitor Display marked as Default or something like on mine which says "Recall")

That could be the indications of a failing monitor, but more likely it is being caused by a corrupted (damaged) graphics card driver.

The nice part about this is the repair can be done easily and without cost.

In many cases you can "uninstall" or delete the display adapter driver and restart your computer. The computer will see the graphics card as "new" when the computer restarts and automatically install the appropriate driver file for it. You would generally be prompted to restart your computer and when the computer starts the second time, your display would be back to normal.

A couple of hitches to this...first we need to know about the Operating System that your computer is running. Different versions of windows do this procedure with slight variations.

Second, we need to know what graphics card your system is running.

This page may help with determining your Operating System information: http://dwightblackburn.com/help.htm

You can open your System Properties window / Device Manager tab and see what display adapter your system has installed. Then, we can direct you do the proper Website where a new graphics driver file can be downloaded if your particular card requires that. Again, we need to know what Operating System that you're running to direct you to the Device Manger window. In many systems you can right click on the My Computer Icon and choose "Properties". Then click the Device Manager tab. In Windows XP, the device Manager button is in the "Hardware" tab.

I hope this is of some help and I look forward to getting the requested additional information from you.

I certainly don't have the knowledge of computers that Dwight or Bedstor have but I can tell you that I had botches of color all over my computer right after a huge lightning strike hit right outside of my house. It scared the hell out of me! But eventually it just went away. I think that it had something to do with what Bedstor is talking about here ---- "demagnetized". Just thought that I'd throw this in,in case this happened to you.

Butter ?
If you have opened the control cover, check for the button which says either OSD or "on screen display"
They may be located beneath the front of the monitor? (layouts all vary)
What brand is your Monitor
And its nothing to do with the computer Operating system OK Smile
Icon idea.. is there anything like an upside down "U" perhaps with a bar or slash ?

I still think you should look into the grapics driver. If that file is corrupted it could cause a variety of problems.

Hi Dwight, I am having this same problem, only my screen doesn't flicker. Just everything is dark. It's not the monitor adjustment, brightness etc... I have checked that. Here is my information so I can try what you suggested.

Hewlett Packard
Pavilion
Celeron (R) CPU 2.93 GHz
2.93 GHz 248 MB of Ram
Windows XP
Is this enough information. Thanks

Is the monitor getting power? There should be a "power on" indicator light showing if it is powered.

Assuming that the monitor is getting power, try to start the computer in Windows Safe Mode.

To start in Safe Mode, Windows XP

1. Turn the computer off
2. Turn the computer on
3. At the first screen image (whatever that is for your machine) repeatedly press and release the F8 key on keyboard
4. When you see the Windows Start Menu, use your keyboard arrow keys to scroll to the Windows Safe Mode
5. When Windows Safe Mode is highlighted, press the Enter key on your keyboard
6. Choose an Administrator mode, Windows XP (your normal login is fine if it is an administrator).
7. Click "Yes" to the Safe Mode description dialog box
8. Windows will start in the Safe Mode.

Do you see anything at all on the screen when attempting to start the computer? If so, then the monitor is probably all right, but their is likely a problem with the graphics driver file or the graphics hardware (the card).

See the posts above to determine what graphics card you have. With Windows XP, you can often just "uninstall" the display adapter in the System Properties, Device Manager window and then restart the computer. The computer will recognize the graphics card driver and automatically reinstall the appropriate driver. You can also download the driver from the adapter manufacturer's site, or from the computer maker's site. If it doesn't attempt to reinstall the driver when the computer is restarted, it is likely the problem is with the card itself or the connection between the card and the computer. Many motherboards have "onboard" graphics and so the reinstall can be more involved than this.

If you see nothing at all, and the power is definitely on, can you try a different monitor with this computer. If a different monitor works, then the problem must be with the monitor. Some monitors do have a circuit breaker switch that can be reset. Look at your monitor service manual or look up the make/model on the Internet for details about this.

If you have to replace the monitor, you can save money buying a used on. You can look for a Used Computer store in your area . One I like here in Anchorage is a franchise called "Computer Renaissance". You can see if there is a store near you: Computer Renaissance

Good luck with this!

So did you replace the driver? Did it fix the problem?

Here is HP's driver site listing that particular graphics card.

Hi Dwight, I don't understand how to unistall this, or where to go in install it. Thanks cswchan for the site, but I think I need to unistall something first?

1. Right-click on the My Computer icon
2. Choose Properties
3. Click the Hardware tab
4. Click the Device Manager button
5. Click the + sign to the left of the Display Adapter entry to expand the folder
6. Right click on the installed file and choose "uninstall"
7. OK the dialog box and close the Device Manager
8. Restart the computer.

Windows should recognize and automatically reinstall the driver file. If it does not reinstall it, there may be a hardware problem. If that is the case, please post the model number of your HP Pavilion computer.

XP will not automatically recognize the proper drivers for a HP computer... I have a similar computer & also a friend has 2... had to install the drivers for it to function properly...
TRY THIS ONE
It's the Intel Graphics Driver for Windows 2000/XP

Or else THIS PAGE

To looks up the model number for your computer.
Good Luck

I haven't had any particular problem with HP computers and allowing Windows to automatically reinstall driver files. However they may very well be certain models that Windows do not have the driver file preinstalled.

In any case, I will agree with cswchan that it would probably be best to download a new driver, then install that. Doing it this way insures that your're getting the latest driver file. I did not suggest this because of my concern about whether you're getting the correct driver for your system and for the Celeron processor installed in your system. It is just easier to allow Windows to do the reinstall automatically, provided the reinstall solves the problem.

If you do download the driver from the links provided by cswchan they will likely install themselves when you open the file.

Good luck with this,

Dwight

Thanks for all the help, but it was the monitor. I did all of the above Dwight and it reinstalled but still had the problem. So my son had another monitor that we hooked up and it works good.
