What version of DirectX is the computer running If its at least V.8 then you can go for the bigger ram Graphics boards 8 or 16MB does sound very outdated to me there are lots of Cheap 32MB boards around (even these are outdated)I'm running a 256MB GeForce FX 5200 which runs on DirectX 9.0c
The GeForce cards seem to be happy on most setups
Late news Matt
If you can raise the cash can you afford this? (on UK Trade Auction site)
www.cqout.com/item.asp?id=1704797 This is a 256MB card retail price around $125
Price now for Roughly $80 plus shipping
I imagine there will be more scattered about this link 64,128 mb Boards
Here is the rest of the listings(6 pages worth) My recommendation? Go for a 128 mb Board such as
Asus 128MB Radeon 9250 TV/DVI 8x Retail They are slow moving on these boards for 32 Pounds($54) plus shipping, 1 view (me?) 15 left (brand new)
It'll really make a difference to your computer Matt
PS what you are seeing is the Basic VGA Color setup which only comes into play if the card driver fails (as an emergency backup) Did that on my computer when my drivers were updated a few weeks back
Had delete the current (old) driver in the control Panel (add/remove programs section)first Then installed the Updated driver while the computer is in the Low res mode (Leaving the old driver installed it can cause display "ripping"

)
Does a reset after installing. Then when you restart you may have to tweak your monitors settings? (may be able to display at a higher resolution?)
