I need help finding a driver for a Fire GL1 video card. My old video card a nVidia Vanta 8MB messed up and I had things on my computer monitor that looked faded.

My cousin who works at a computer repair store gave me a used video card called a Fire GL1.

He told me to get a driver at driver.com and put the driver on a floppy disk but I tried and I couldn't find one. He tried looking for it himself and emailed me a link to download it but I'm not for sure it was the right one. I download it and put it on a floppy disk and when I go to extract the driver to my computer a pop-up appears and starts extracting the driver to my computer but when it's done my computer flashes and the it freezes up on me. He was suppose to come and help me yesterday but he was a no show. I thought maybe one of you can help me.

My computer is a Compaq Presario and I have ME (Millennium Edition.). If you give me a link to driver to download, try to find one that will fit on a floppy disk. If you need more info on my computer please ask.

I'm not the best at fixing things on a computer. I've never heard of a computer driver till the other day. My computer color now is like an old video game system from the 80's and very hard to see. I hope maybe one of you can help me or I may have to buy a new one. Frown

Thanks,
Matt

Hi Pace

I did find the 2000 driver here but I'm not sure the link will show up. The 2000 should work the same as long as its not a higher version. You do have to download it to your hardrive since it is 4.8MB. Once you download it, just delete it when you have updated. You can register for free drivers at http://www.driverguide.com/. I can see a lot of uses for this site and it seems very reputable. It does try to get you to sign up for a newsletter but that is to be expected. If this doesn't work then you may have to use that glad garbage bag to toss it and get a new one. Wink I just saw a Fire GL1 video card Ebay for $1.00. You could buy one like you had for about the same price. nVidia Vanta 8MB Now you know the bargain your cousin gave you. Frown

clarebear, Thanks for reply. I have an account at driverguide.com and I downloaded the driver at the link you gave me. I tried to install it on my computer but I kept getting the pop-up saying "The installation is not intended for this operating system"., so I guess this is not the right driver for my computer.

Maybe you or some else can find the right one at driverguide.com or another driver website.

I was thinking about buying one off of ebay but my cousin told me to wait and he would come to my house and fix the problem. He said he was going to bring me a Nivida 32 meg card yesterday but he never showed up.

I thought I could get the one he gave me to work but I'm having problems finding the right driver for it.

I'm thinking about getting a faster video card at ebay or Office Max but I don't want to spend a lot of money on it.

Maybe someone can recommend a good one for me.

Thanks, I bet that's why I been having so much trouble trying to get it to work. I thought 2000 was the same as ME. Confused

Like I said before maybe someone can recommend a good one for me. I would like to find one faster than 8mb. A 32MB would be nice but if a 16MB is cheaper I may go with it. It might be hard to find one compatible with my computer. I don't want to buy one off of ebay then find out later that it wasn't for my computer.

What version of DirectX is the computer running If its at least V.8 then you can go for the bigger ram Graphics boards 8 or 16MB does sound very outdated to me there are lots of Cheap 32MB boards around (even these are outdated)I'm running a 256MB GeForce FX 5200 which runs on DirectX 9.0c
The GeForce cards seem to be happy on most setups
Late news Matt
If you can raise the cash can you afford this? (on UK Trade Auction site)www.cqout.com/item.asp?id=1704797
This is a 256MB card retail price around $125
Price now for Roughly $80 plus shipping
I imagine there will be more scattered about this link 64,128 mb Boards
Here is the rest of the listings(6 pages worth)

My recommendation? Go for a 128 mb Board such as
Asus 128MB Radeon 9250 TV/DVI 8x Retail
They are slow moving on these boards for 32 Pounds($54) plus shipping, 1 view (me?) 15 left (brand new)
It'll really make a difference to your computer Matt
PS what you are seeing is the Basic VGA Color setup which only comes into play if the card driver fails (as an emergency backup) Did that on my computer when my drivers were updated a few weeks back
Had delete the current (old) driver in the control Panel (add/remove programs section)first Then installed the Updated driver while the computer is in the Low res mode (Leaving the old driver installed it can cause display "ripping" Eek)
Does a reset after installing. Then when you restart you may have to tweak your monitors settings? (may be able to display at a higher resolution?) Wink

My DirectX version is 7.1

My cousin called this morning and told me to meet him after work and he would give me a GeForce2 MX 400 video card and the driver on a CD.

I hope this one works with my computer.

Thanks for the info and if I need more help with this one I post here.

Got the other video card yesterday. Had a little trouble with it at the beginning but I figured it out. I been downloading lots of other drivers for the fire gl1 one and it was messing my new one up.

Glad to see my computer working good again. Smile

He put DirectX 9.0 on the disk with the driver and now I have that too. Wink
