I scanned a picture from a magazine and sent it to myself via email. It arrived in .jpeg format. I want to transfer it to Word so I can do a word count. Is this possible, and if so how is it done? XP and Premium, Word 2003.

I am not really well versed in this, but when I scan something, I have a choice of where to put it as part of the scanner's operation. I have scanned text before, and sent it to Word Pad, where I could open it and edit it. Is the scanner where you can do that?

You can save the .jpeg file then use the Word "Insert" menu to insert the image file (picture) into the document.


However, if I understand you correctly, you wish to make Word to a word count to the magazine article which you scanned as an image file. If that is the case, it won't work because Word can only count words that are in textual format.

You could rescan the magazine article and use the Optical Character Recongnition (OCR) format which will convert the image into text. Then save the resulting file and open it in Word and do the word count.

No, it is just the word processing program that I like.

From Wikipedia - WordPad is a simple word processor coming with almost all versions of Microsoft Windows from Windows 95 upwards. It is more advanced than Notepad, but not as advanced as Microsoft Word.

My printer is also a Lexmark, an x74-X75 All-In-On Center. It prints, copies, and scans. When I open it, the main pages shows a Scan button on the right, with a drop-down window just to the left of that. The window offers the options of sending a scanned image to Clipboard, File, Fax, E-mail, Photo Editor, Acrobat Reader, IE, Kodak Imaging, MicroSoft Paint, MicroSoft Power Point, MicroSoft Word, Notepad, WordPad, and a Search for more Option. Just below that window is another option, See More Scan Settings. Opening this asks what is being scanned, and the choices are Photo, Mixed graphics and text, Black text, and Magazine/Newspaper.

Dorian, I believe you have a different model than mine. It sounds newer - more advanced. Thank you for typing all that. I didn't realize there was a WordPad program with Windows, I've never seen it.

you can find Word Pad and Note Pad and other stuff under Accessories.
Got to Start >> All Programs >> Accessories >> then slide down the list - lots of stuff there.

Catty, I bought my LexMark at one of those computer blow-out sales. I think they are productions of a company called Blue Star. They have them every-so-often in conventions centers and the like. Mine was factory reconditioned, and came with the same warranty as a new one, for about half the price.($60?) I bought it from a factory rep at the sale. I bought a computer at another one a year or so later. The computer cost $130, and suits my needs.
