I have Windows XP on my PC and when setting the display appearance in the advanced tab, which I have done for years, something happened I have never had happen before. I set the tool bar to be all the same color, and the option to set a left/right color fade disappeared. I can't get it back. I even tried a system restore to the day the software was installed. Where did I kill the default on this setting. It is not a problem really, but I don't know how to get it back on and I figured I put all the time into building this site so there is no reason to sit around and not know how to change it back to the two color fade.Wink

A few notes, I already have tried with it set as Windows Standard and Windows Classic, neither bring the option back.
I did, as I said, a system restore to an earlier time (before I changed the option)and it did not come back. I have used this system for over a year and never had this trouble before.

Thanks - KK

Hi KK
Have you looked in the option marked "Effects"?(above the Advanced button)
And is the top item set to "Fade effect"? NOT "Scroll effect"? Roll Eyes and the box is ticked? Swap these settings to see if it makes a difference?
On the Advanced Settings Check the settings under(big dropdown menu)Both Active and Inactive titlebars settings (just a guess?) the display in the window will change as you alter. most settings press Ok to set and exit.

Yeah man I have checked those, nothing doing. Like I said I have used this system since before XP was officially released (about two weeks before the national release date) and I have never had a problem until I set the toolbar to be the same color on both ends. I have formatted and rebooted my system numerous times, I have complete disc backups for evey program I own, so a format is a great way to clean things up fast. And I do mean format, not restore. I used the restore the other day as I mentioned but even it was no help. Maybe something I have to do in NT.... XP is not DOS based...

...there is even an alert now on the menu window that says "if you are not using Windows classic style there are functions that will not work" and the second color select boxes are 'greyed out'

Next suggestion please.

King,
You said you tried a system restore to the day the changes were made, how about trying one for the day before? Have you tried that?

No I had just formatted the day before so there WAS no day before. have since formatted again and now have the fade back, but if anyone knows a different way to get them back, it should be posted. I have more than 30 applications that are on my system in addition to the windows package, but I have everything backed up on disc and I can go from format to full load in about three hours.

Trying to learn all I can from these questions, I checked out my settings, and until now I didn't know what 'fade' even was. I don't have, or can't find the 'left/right color fade' option either. I don't know if I ever had the option. But it would be kind of cool. I'll keep checking to see if this mystery is solved. Smile

It is a function of XP only as far as I know. If you don't have XP you don't have the fade.

Windows 98 supports a horizonal color shift for active and inactive toolbars. The option is set in Display Properties, Appearance, Item, Active | Inactive Title Bar.

Yes as I mentioned in my first post after I set both colors to the same color, the second color select option was then and continued to remained grayed out. And also after that a message stating that if any selection other than windows classic was used the two color option would not be available. And then, even if windows classic was selected the two color option was still no longer available.

As I said earlier, I have reformatted and now have the bars back. Anyone else who has the ability and time to reformat might want to set both color at the same value, I did it on active and unactive toolbars. At that time it became locked out. Do not attempt this unless you are 150% sure that you know exactly what you are doing. Formatting a PC should never be attempted by a novice or inexperienced user. I think I may have stumbled upon a glitch in the XP software actually. So far in this thread everything that has been suggested was already done as outlined in my first post.

I didn't know that 98 had that feature as well, as I went from 95 to XP

I do have win xp home, but I don't have the left/right fade option. I have the option for color one and color two, but I don't see any difference in the appearance, unless when I look at this reply box, at the very top border the colors fade( from left to right) from blue to lilac. Is that it?

Yes that is it. You can set them to any colors that tickle your fancy. I have blue/white with white text for active and white/violet with violet text for inactive. It goes well with AOL 9.0's color scheme.
