When praying at home, do you pray when you're alone or do you have family prayer? Can you connect better with God if you're alone?

I do both. We pray before every meal, whether at home or out to eat. My son leads our supper prayers. I also pray with my kids before bed, and sometimes if we are having a rough morning, we will say a prayer to try to calm things down.

I also pray alone. I feel equally connected with God. Sometimes when I am feeling disconnected, the best way to jump back in is to pray with my kids. It helps them to see me vulnerable sometimes. At least I think so. I think kids need to see parents struggling sometimes.

There are other times, where I just need my time alone with God.

p.s. Great question Honi!

My sister, cat, and I all pray alone. That's right: the cat prays. She meditates by going into a trance and staring at the wall. Also, she does laying on of paws when she is sitting on the sofa and kneading at our thighs.

My cats do that, too, Tsaeb -the laying on of paws thing, anyway. I think it's in their genes.

I don't pray, per se, but I do perform my rituals alone, generally. Occasionally I attend a circle with others, but normally it is just me. My husband does not pray or perform rituals of any sort. Normally, I prefer to do this when the house is empty, as well, so that I am entirely alone (except for the cats, of course).

I don't "pray" per se, unless I am at my inlaw's, in which case we say Grace before we eat because they are Christian, and I think it's right to follow their customs when I'm in their house eating their food Wink

I do speak to God, I don't know if anything is up there and/or if anything is listening, but it makes me feel better.

I offer many short prayers just in my head throughout the day. I also have personal prayers morning and night. We pray together before every meal and have a prayer together as a couple after we read the scriptures every night. We don't yet have prayer as a family because we only have one small baby but we plan to as she gets older. We also have about 6 prayers as a church group every Sunday at church. I don't think it's always better to be alone or with a group. I think it depends on the purpose of the prayer and the spirit that is in your heart. Sometimes it helps me to have others there to glean off their spirit. Often, to hear the sincerity in another's prayer touches my heart and strengthens my spirit. Praying with my spouse has been very helpful on many occasions and brings us closer to God as a couple and closer to each other. Growing up I remember having family prayer often. Hearing my parents pray for each of us as their children helped me want to make correct choices and do my best in life. It brought us closer together as a family and helped us feel more comfortable sharing our struggles with each other. Before each family prayer whoever was offering the prayer that night would ask, "Does anyone need anything or thankful for anything in particular?" This would give us the opportunity to ask them to include a certain something in the prayer. I don't think God hears you any less or more when you're alone. Your own humility determines how connected you are with God. He knows each of us and knows our needs. Sometimes though, I think it can be more powerful to pray and even fast as a group when you're asking for a specific blessing. I think it's healthy and necessary to pray alone and with your family daily to remain in tune with the spirit.

alone. I've gotten into the habit recently, of at least five minutes each day, when no one else is home, I'll turn on some calming music, and have a conversation with G-d. It helps me focus more throughout the rest of the day.
