I don't think that Algebra per say had a father. It evolved in Egypt & Babylon.

I just found this, also on Encarta, he apparently wins the title!


Diophantus (flourished 3rd century AD), Greek mathematician. He lived in Alexandria, Egypt, where he occupied himself chiefly with Diophantine analysis, earning the title father of algebra. He wrote the Arithmetica, of which only 6 of 13 books survive.
