I want some good links to fractal information. Something that would allow me to better understand just what Mandelbrot or Julia discovered. What was the formula...or was there one...or do we even care about a formula? Were they using computers? What were they trying to do and what did they do ( aside from discovering a way of measure)? The 2 sets look very different, how many others might be possible? Can a computer be programmed to discover another set?

It is very possible for a computer to be programmed to discover another fractal set. However, it's dependent on what limits you set. Are we talking a two-dimensional fractal?

I second CHRIS F's opinion.
The method has been devised, it is up to us to go on / the need, the requirement usually defines the limit for me.

The theorem of fractals can be very well used in deciphering [u]series[/u] or Arithmetic Progression, for that matter.
