Hi All:
Many times in my work I need to put a so-called
"Strapping chart" into the monitoring system for an underground fuel tank of circular cross section so the current volume can be calculated.

Most of the time this chart is provided by tank manufacturer.
How would I derive a vormula that would allow me to do this without the chart?

I would like to find the per-cent of the full volume of the blue area in terms of Total full Volume, Tank diamater(D) and current fuel height (H).

Thanks
Mike b. (AKA Byter)

PS: The picture depicts looking at the tank from the end,
Tank is actually a big cylinder.

Mike:

This link provides both an online calculator and a formula for determining the volume at any given depth should you be offline.

Tank Volume Calculator

If extreme accuracy is required, of course, you will need to know things such as tank wall thickness, pressure, temperature, vapor density for the gaseous area, etc. I used to do these calculations routinely for tanks with hemispherical and elliptical heads, and found that calculating the heads separately from the cylindrical shell was prudent.

Hope this helps.

Thanks a million 'FUSE
With that equation they gave I'll probably be able now to change it around to what I want to do.

That calculator actually makes a chart "UPSIDE DOWN" from what I was thinking about. Eek
Guess I can stand on head to make it work. Roll Eyes

I agree that you would need more info to be really accurate but these are fuel storage tanks; Diesel, unleaded, JP8 etc.

The monitor system I'm installing (Veeder-Root TLS-350) has thermistors in the probe that take care of tempature compensation.

Thanks again, I'll holler if I can't make this work.

Sorry I am late on this one, Byter...

You may want to check the answers I gave to previous questions similar to this one at www.numericana.com/answer/formula.htm#tank. This seems to be a popular topic... :)
