The Pythagorean theorum, applicable to right triangles (those with a 90-degree angle in them), states that the square of the hypotenuse (the longest leg of the triangle, opposite the 90-degree angle) is equal to the sum of the squares of the other two legs. This is more simply stated as:

a2 + b2 = c2
