I was wondering if anyone had any recomendations for open leg bands for my cockatiels. I don't want to sound picky, but I do want to find something that is the most comfortable for my birds and will not affect their normal rutines.
The down side of having to use the open leg bands is that if you do not get them completely closed they can snag on almost anything in the cage including the cage itself. This is the only concern about open leg bands. Make sure that the bands are completely closed.
Leg bands are made and sized specifically for different breeds of birds, so if you purchase bands made specifically for cockatiels they will be the correct size and comfort whether they are open or closed leg bands. Purchasing leg bands originally intended for a much larger bird can pose the same risks as a open leg band that is not closed properly.
Most cockatiel breeders opt to band baby birds with closed leg bands when they are between 10 and 14 days old when the feet are still small enough to slip through the band. After this point in time the feet will be too big to slip through and the only option is to use the open leg bands.
