Can someone give me some advice on looking up information on someone when you only have a name? I don't know if they are alive or dead or where they are at.

You could try running a search for them on 1-800-US-SEARCH or a service like that. Unfortunately, there is a service fee attached.

Some sites such as Yahoo, AT&T, etc. have a "people search" - like a world-wide phone book. It's a good place to start.

The SSDI is very up to date. We found my grandmother on there, and she died three years ago.

All I have here is a name. No other information at all. This makes it very hard to do anything with.

Try posting the name on several genealogy bulletin boards with your questions. Someone may know something and contact you. It has worked for me. Try the following for a start.
