I have done some reasearch on my family history and I can only find information as far back as my great great grand-father. What information I do have I got from a book in the library, but I don't know how to find out more than what was in the book. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Hi Opal Ann: & Welcome to AnswerPool.
One of the largest family history sites is
http://www.ancestry.com/
Click the above to go there.
There are probably thousands of this type of site on the internet but this should get you started.
Hopefully some others on this board can pass on some personal experiances, since I seldom use this myself.

Again, A warm welcome to you.

Some things I've found helpful -

Do you know if your public library has a genealogy section? Books, microfilms, microfiche are all wells of information. Some cities have an actual genealogy branch of their library (we do).

Some cities also have a genealogical society - they're very helpful too. (I mean - it's what they DO! Wink )

Also the Mormon Church (Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints) keeps extensive genealogy records and you don't have to be a member to use them.

Census records are also a wonderful way to track relatives!

My mother used to search through cemeteries for "long-lost" relatives! (I have vivid memories of searching cemeteries in ALL kinds of weather! It was a trip!) Headstones often have information on them, plus you may find other relatives buried in the same section.

Here are some genealogy websites:

A wealth of information has already been offered here. The only comment I'd like to add from experience of doing some genealogy myself is to document everything.
Be sure you have first gotten all the information you can from your immediate family and document it all whether you THINK it is fact or not. Order birth certificates, death, marriage certificates, deed, successions, etc.
The information you got from the book, was it written by some one doing family tracing too? Check their sources. A family member of mine compiled a wealth of information on my fathers family. On the first page listing my fathers siblings two name were spelled wrong and a birth date was incorrect. I discounted this persons work because if she couldn't get that part correct, than the rest was questionable.
The point I'm trying to make is: document everything!
Also don't forget to add stories from the old folks still alive, besides they love to tell them. To me, that was the most fun.
Good luck.
