A relation of my fathers in Ireland was (allegedly) interned in Portlaoise Prison some time in the 30's 40's for murder.None of my fathers living relatives will mention it,but i would love to find out something of the story.I have tried searching on the net,but don't really know where to start.I looked at Portlaoise prison, and tried to find archive information at irish newspaper sites but to no avail. All I have to go on is the surname of the person,do you think it's possible to find this information on the internet alone?
I don't know specifically about internment records, Viv, but I know that coroner's inquest records are embargoed for 75 years except for direct enquiries from close relatives. I would think the Irish newspapers would be your best place to search, or (and it pains me to say this) Sinn Fein may have records of those interned.

Thanks Ewood,i thought that the newspapers would be my best bet,I'm not sure about the Sinn Fein angle, maybe interned was the wrong word,it was a crime of passion apparently not political.
